HelgaBaby was set up by Helen Fitzpatrick who has been a mad one for a sewing machine for over 35 years! She says, ‘I always loved crafts and making things, even as a little girl, and I used to hand sew little bits and bobs here and there. Then I graduated to an old Singer treadle machine, which I thought was the bees knees until I learnt how to use an electric machine in secondary school and from that point there was really no stopping me!’
Helen started to make clothes for herself (and her friends!) along with soft furnishings including curtains, bedding and loose covers. Then when friends started families, Helen started making baby gifts such as cot bedding, changing mats and bunting. So when a new niece came along, Helen made a changing mat and mum and dad (Sam and Liam) loved the fabric so much that they asked could it be used to re-cover a lampshade for the nursery? The answer was yes and so an old brown lampshade received a new lease of life and matched the changing mat perfectly!
A little while later, when their daughter was going to be moving from her cot to a proper bed, Sam asked Helen if she could make a quilt using her little one’s old baby clothes, as she really couldn’t bear the thought of getting rid of any of them. Again, the answer was yes, so down came the bags from the loft and Sam and Liam chose all their favourites to be used in the quilt. Sam says, ‘We were initially a bit worried at the thought of all those gorgeous little items being cut into patches, but we couldn’t be more delighted with the finished quilt and it’s something that both we and our daughter will cherish forever.’
And so in 2017, the HelgaBaby seed was ‘sewn’ (?) and Helen started to make bespoke quilts to order, together with her range of banners, bunting and other crafts and gifts. She says, ‘We love the fact that whilst the products we make are the same design, our bespoke items are completely unique and beloved to each individual customer and we hope that each one will be treasured for years to come.’
